The Shredder was a great FPV vehicle but it left something to be desired when it came to running trails and offroad. Can’t really fault it for that it was sold as a basher not a crawler/trail rig. On RCGroups there is a group that doing surface FPV. For the most part they are using Traxxas Summits, with most of them putting 70’s Tonka Bronco bodies on them. The advantage of the Summit is that it has locking diffs so when the going gets rough you can lock the diffs. It also has a 2 speed transmission so you can cruise with it or slow it down and have tons of torque. All done from the transmitter.
So I went searching for a nice used Summit. Checked craigslist and didn’t come up with anything. Looked on eBay and found a demo & new one with a damaged box both auctions so I added them to the watch list but kept searching. Searched the classifieds on RCCrawler.com, found one at a reasonable price but no pictures. Contacted the seller for pictures. Had some overnight. Looked nice so after a little negotiation on price we came to pass and closed the deal.
The lightly used Traxxas Summit arrived today and it looked as good in person and it did in the pictures. Had a New Bright Hummer that I had bought for the Shredder, fitted it to the Summit and it was to large. I had been looking at the Tonka Broncos on ebay. Lost the auction on a pink one by $4 but that’s the way it goes. Last night I found a nice one for a decent Buy it Now price. So I purchased it.
It was raining all day so I really couldn’t test the Summit. I did however change the Traxxas battery connectors to the Powerpole connectors that I use on all my RC’s. Put a couple of batteries in it and cruised around the living room and basement with it. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
